SUNSET ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, SFUSD
This new bungalow design showcased three modular classrooms in the same space. Within the interior, we incorporated clerestory windows for day lighting on all four sides of each room and ample cross-ventilation. The dynamic solutions to the site constraints meant incorporating entry ramp systems at the two major entries, woven together with convenience stairs, planters, and benches integrate the accessible and able-bodied paths to create usable exterior open spaces. The elevator and its equipment are part of the entry design, providing greater scale and prominence to the street address entry. Interior upgrades included new corridor finishes, new ceilings, lighting and flooring in all the classrooms. The students and staff call it a ‘new school’ and greatly appreciate the facility matching their mission to enhance the education of the children.
