PINSKY RESIDENCE, CALISTOGA
This residence, in the hills above downtown Calistoga, is located at the end of a cul-de-sac and is nestled amongst rather dense homes. The clients, a Bay Area clothing designer and her husband, envisioned creating a secure yet artistic fence to separate the street from the home and garden while alluding to the Napa Valley grasses and older grape stake fencing. This special residential fence serves multiple design purposes. The distinctive configuration respects the landscape vernacular while creating a sense of privacy without being “fortress like”. The finished design embodies a natural screen in the landscape rather than a typical solid metal wall, a characteristic all too common with residential privacy solutions. The designer created sections that steps down with the undulating property line that could be manufactured off site. Each section reflects various sizes of rebar and widths of steel cross plates.
The new street side fence and gate is cleverly constructed from alternately sized rebar rods and is cantilevered from I-beams embedded in the hillside. The translucent and open design characterizes the surrounding heritage oak trees and landscape while maintaining privacy.
